The 20m bleep test levels, speeds and shuttles
The standard multi-stage fitness test starts at 8 km/h and gets faster every level, about once a minute. There are 21 levels and 4,940 metres in all. Your score is written as level and shuttle, so 8.8 means the eighth shuttle of level 8.

Fitness standards
Bleep test scores for the police and fire service
The targets built into the app. Police forces in England and Wales use a 15 metre version of the test, which the app includes. These are a guide to aim for, not official requirements: standards vary and change, so always check with the organisation you are applying to. Bleep Test isn't connected to any of them.

Questions
Bleep test questions, answered
What is the bleep test?
The bleep test, also called the beep test, the 20m shuttle run or the multi-stage fitness test, is a running test between two lines 20 metres apart. You run to the other line before each bleep. The bleeps get closer together at every level, and your score is the level and shuttle you reach before you can no longer keep up.
Is the Bleep Test app free?
Yes. The standard 20m test, results, VO2 max estimates and progress are free, for solo runs or up to 4 people at once. Premium is a single £2.99 payment, with no subscription, and adds unlimited people, squads, the police and Leger tests, fitness standards, a training plan and more voices.
What do I need to run a bleep test?
A flat space at least 20 metres long, two cones or lines to mark each end, and your iPhone with the sound up. A sports hall, playground or field works well. For a big group, connect a Bluetooth speaker.
Does it keep going if my phone locks?
Yes. The test keeps running, and the bleeps and call-outs stay in time, with the screen locked. With Premium, the current level and shuttle also show live on your lock screen.
What bleep test level do I need for the police?
Police forces in England and Wales use a 15 metre version of the test. The usual pass mark for recruitment and the annual test is level 5.4, and specialist roles such as firearms need more. The app has the 15m police test and the standards built in. Pass marks can change, so always check with your force.
What is a good bleep test score?
It depends on your age, sex and sport. As a guide, level 8 to 10 is fit for most adults, and many professional footballers and rugby players reach level 13 or higher. With Premium, the app gives you a fitness rating for your age and sex.
Do I need an account, and is my data shared?
No account is needed. There are no ads and no tracking, and your names and results stay on your phone.
Is Bleep Test on Android?
Not yet. Bleep Test is for iPhone, and needs iOS 16.4 or later.
